James' father was Peter Hamer and his mother was Elizabeth (Betsy) Cunliffe. His maternal grandparents were James Cunliffe and Ellen (Nelly) Hill. He had a brother named Peter. He was the older of the two children. He died at the age of 60 in March 1909 in Bolton.²
