Mary's father was William Hodson and her mother was Maria Collins. Her maternal grandparents were William Collings and Maria Mather. She had three brothers and four sisters, named John, Luke, William, Nancy, Maria, Eliza and Sarah. She was the fourth oldest of the eight children.
