William's father was William Hodson and his mother was Maria Collins. His maternal grandparents were William Collings and Maria Mather. He had two brothers and five sisters, named John, Luke, Nancy, Maria, Mary, Eliza and Sarah. He was the seventh oldest of the eight children.
