Sarah was born on November 3rd, 1871 in Bolton and her baptism took place on January 7th, 1872 at St. Peter's (Bolton) conducted by Curate John Stott.1 2  Sarah's father was James Cunliffe Hamer and her mother was Happy Collings.  Her paternal grandparents were Peter Hamer and Elizabeth (Betsy) Cunliffe; her maternal grandparents were John Collings and Sarah Williams. She had six sisters named Mary, Emma, Happy, Maria, Eva and Ethel.  She was the oldest of the seven children.

‌Sarah and Henry were married in a religious ceremony on February 20th, 1892 at St. Peter's (Bolton).3   The family line is yet to be completed.
