Sarah was born on November 3rd, 1871 in Bolton and her baptism took place on January 7th, 1872 at St. Peter's (Bolton) conducted by Curate John Stott.1 2  Sarah's father was James Cunliffe Hamer and her mother was Happy Collings.  Her paternal grandparents were Peter Hamer and Elizabeth (Betsy) Cunliffe; her maternal grandparents were John Collings and Sarah Williams. She had six sisters named Mary, Emma, Happy, Maria, Eva and Ethel.  She was the oldest of the seven children.
