Mary was born in 1876 in Bolton.¹ Mary's father was James Cunliffe Hamer and her mother was Happy Collings. Her paternal grandparents were Peter Hamer and Elizabeth (Betsy) Cunliffe; her maternal grandparents were John Collings and Sarah Williams. She had six sisters named Sarah, Emma, Happy, Maria, Eva and Ethel. She was the second oldest of the seven children.
