Emma was born in 1878 in Bolton and her baptism took place on December 4th, 1878 at St. John (Bolton).1 2  Emma's father was James Cunliffe Hamer and her mother was Happy Collings.  Her paternal grandparents were Peter Hamer and Elizabeth (Betsy) Cunliffe; her maternal grandparents were John Collings and Sarah Williams. She had six sisters named Sarah, Mary, Happy, Maria, Eva and Ethel.  She was the third oldest of the seven children.
