Joseph's father was Joseph Collings and his mother was Ann Taylor. His paternal grandparents were William Collings and Maria Mather. He had three brothers and three sisters, named William, Samuel, George, Maria, Elizabeth and Sarah. He had a foster brother named John.

- In 1881, Joseph (22, unmarried) was still with his parents. He was a coal carter at 39 Apple Street (like his father).
  
  In 1883 Joseph Collings married Nancy Yates (Bolton RO)
  
  After he married James became a Horse Keeper (groome) for a while, taking over from his mother-in-law, though be 1901 he was a Carter (forman) again.
