Joseph died after Selina was born, and Nancy re-marries a Smith.  In 1881, Nancy Smith (50) was with all four Mather daughters

1775 - 1836 Bold (Bould) Mather 60 60 For others, Bold is often spelled Bould, but not here.  Bold was the son of John and Ann Mather and had a brother "Berry".  His father, John Mather, was also a Tailor from Middleton.

Bold clearly liked being a Tailor, since both his wives were Taylor!  He initially lived in Middleton, where all the children were born and baptised, although later (after 1810) moved to Little Bolton.

In 1800, when Ann died, Bold was recorded as a soldier.  Perhaps he was away for a few years between 1798-1801 and this is why there are no births at this time.

In 1809, Bold Mather (aged 33 yrs) & Margaret Taylor (aged 33 yrs), both of this parish (Eccles) were married.

Bold Mather was on the 1831 parish Poor List, living at Brown Street, Bolton.  There is little else known of him.  He appears not to have advertised in the local papers.

In 1832 Martha (46) wife of Bold Mather of Little Bolton died.

In 1836, Bold Mather, a tailor from Little Bolton, died in bed on Monday morning (aged 60).  He was found about 9am at his lodgings.  An inquest was held, and the verdict was "Died by the visitation of God" (Bolton Chronical, 23 Jan 1836).
1776 - 1839 Margaret Taylor 63 63 There is no marriage for a Margaret Mather daughter of Taylor after Bold died. 1810 Nancy Mather After her father suddenly died in 1836, Nancy Mather of Moor Lane married John Harwood (24-Jan-1838).  Her father Bold Mather was a tailor. ~1810 John Harwood In 1837, John was a widower when he married Nancy Mather.  James Mather (her step-brother) was a witness.

The couple may have moved to Blackburn (or Lower Darwen) as there are birth records for June (Jane) and Nelly, Mary and Thomas (1840,1842,1844 & 1847) but cant be found on census.
1806 - 1807 Mary Mather 5m 5m ~1776 - 1807 Alice Taylor 31 31 1825 - >1861 Peter Mather 36 36 Another Peter (15) was at Lane Ends, Middle Hulton in 1841

Son of Nathan & Alice (Bolton, 1825), confirmed by Marriage.

Peter was missing in 1851, and there is a gap in births until Joseph was born in 1859.  Did he go to America to visit his uncle?  His grandfather Richard died there in August 1851.
1822 - 1823 John Mather 9m 9m 1828 - 1908 William Mather 80 80 In 1841, aged 13, living in Middleton

In 1850, William was a Shoemaker at 303 Deansgate, Manchester (23) when he married Eliza (19)

In 1851, William and Eliza (19, dau-in-law) who had probably just married, was with the family.

By 1861 William and Eliza had 4 children, but that number had doubled to 8 in 1871.

In 1891, William (Widower) and his 5 youngest children were at 32 Middleton Road, Great Heaton
1806 - 1880 Alice Brooks 74 74 In Jan 1880, Alice wife of Nathaniel of  Boardman Lane, Rhodes died, aged 74 1830 - 1867 Hannah Mather 37 37 In 1841, aged 11, living in Middleton

Hannah married Thomas Bailey in 1848, and had two daughters in 1849 and 1853.

Did something happen to Hannah?.  Here daughters were with other family in 1861 and her parents in 1871.
1834 - 1882 John Mather 48 48 In 1841, aged 7, living in Middleton 1837 - 1916 Nancy Mather 78 78 Nancy was baptised twice, first as a child, and later aged 17 (with Nathaniel and Alice) before she married.

In 1854: Alice wasnt baptissed until she was 9 years old, together with siblings Nathanier and Nancy.

In 1871, Alice (26) was still single, living with parents Nathaniel and Alice (69 & 65) in Middleton

1 Aug 1874, Alice married Charles Mills, an Etcher.  Thery were married 4 yeard before Charles died in 1848, and allice in 1879.  There may well be children, but no baptisms. Any children would be likely adopted out or taken in by other family..

Oct 1879, Alice, widow of Charles Mills, Thorpe Street, Rhodes died aged only 33.
1798 - 1800 Ann Mather 2 2 1805 - 1805 Mary Ann Mather 1802 James Mather James married Sarah Nancy Aked, and between 1841-51 James moved from Bury to Lichfield, Staffs.

After they married, James and Sarah lived at Heap Bridge, Heywood (East of Bury). He was at Heap Fold when Edmund baptised in 1827.

In 1841, James, a paper dealer, and Sarah (both 35) were at Heap Brow, Heywood, (nr Bury) with Edmund (14), John (12), Alice (8), Robert (7), Alfred (5), Frederic (3) and Aked (2mo)

In 1851, James, a paper maker, and Sarah (48 & 47) were at Alton, Staffordshire with 6 children.

There is another James Mather from Middleton, son of James and Alice.  This James died in Farnworth in 1873, aged 73.  It is this James, a shopkeeper, that married a much (22y) younger Ann Leah in 1860, the daughter of Joseph and Mary.
1795 - 1795 John Mather 9m 9m 1793 - 1794 Bould Mather 1 1 Bould (maybe Bold) Mather, son of James Mather is a mystery.  Born of Elizabeth, but Isobel recorded as mother when buried.  There is only one Bould Mather.  Isobel is a diminuative name for Elizabeth.

25 March 1794, Bould son of Isabel Mather, Poor, of Great Bolton died and buried at St Peter's, aged 1.
1829 Elizabeth Leigh 1831 - 1900 Luke Mather 69 69 Luke was the son of Richard Mather.  He was also married at Manchester Cathederal, just two years after Luke, son of Thomas, but are they related?

in 1851, Luke was with his older brother James at Salford

In 1861, Luke and Elizabeth (30 & 34) had his nephew Richard (11, born Salford) as well as sons John and William (6 & 2)
1775 - 1850 John Mather 75 75 John Son of Ann Eckersley of Kersley (SE Bolton between Farnworth and Clifton) by John Mather, baptised at Ringley (1 mile East on the other side of the River Irwell).

NOTE: Assumed to be the John Mather & Alice Gore family (as DOB matches death), but could also be son of Thomas b.1766 at Little Hulton (better expected age and place of birth, matching Alice Mort).

In 1841, John Mather (65), George Mather (25) and Frederic Fish (20) were at Derby Street, East Bolton

8 Sep 1850, John Mather of Derby Street, Bolton died, aged 75.  His death was recorded in the Bolton Chronical.
1777 - 1866 Berry (Bury) Mather 89 89 Bury married Ellen Burton in Bolton in 1792

Ellen must have died about 1804, and no more children came until John and Nathan. Nathan was baptised with mother Elizabeth, so pehaps Berry and Elizabeth were together for almost 20 years before they married.

In 1841, Berry (indexed as Betty, 60, and female) was an overlooker, with wife Betty (50) at Field Head Cottages.

In 1851, Berry (Bury) was 73 with his new wife Betty (63) at Horton, Yorkshire.  They had their children Bury (21 and Sarah (19) with them.

In 1851, Martha (22, married) was with James (4) and Sarah (1). She was living with her borthers Abraham (31, Head, Wid), Isaac and John Dawson. Peter was missing.

In 1861, Martha (Head, Mar, 32) was with James (14), Sarah (11) and Joseph (3). She was a silk weaver (hand loom)

1779 - 1842 Rhoda Unsworth 63 63 In 1841, as well as Otho (50) and their children, Rhoda (60) also had John Unsworth (35, weaver) living with the family at Dukinfield, Stockport.  This was probably a younger brother or nephew.

There seem to be two (or three) John and Ann marriages and families.  In July-1775 John Mather of Standish married Ann Eckersley by licence at Deane having already had a son John baptised Feb-1775 (with mother and father named).  Then came Margaret (1776) and Bury (1777) and then the children stop!

There’s another family with births and burials at Astley (part of Leigh) from 1781.  Astley is between Leigh and Bolton.  There is no new Lancashire marriage which could be this John and Ann from Astley family.  It new seems that this is a continuation of the same family, now relocated to Astley.

The Dec-1781 marriage at Bolton to Ann Greenwood appears to be a close fit for John Mather which almost fits the Astley family, except Rachel was born 1781 before the December marriage (so John would not be from Standish).   Also Ann Greenwood and John Mather are believed to be another family who had married and lived in Bolton (also in this tree).

There is also an Anne (with and “e”) Spencer and John Mather marriage at Haslingden in 1775 but this is North of Bolton, and too early.
1807 - 1807 Ellis Mather 1781 - 1788 Rachel Mather 7 7 1789 Rachel Mather No obvious death or marriage for Rachel, so what happened to her? 1800 - 1801 Ann Mather 1 1 1794 - 1797 Mary Mather 2 2 1797 Thomas Mather In 1818, Thomas Mather married Ann Hulton.  It may be this Thomas (tbc).  Thomas's half-brother Henry was born in Middleton in 1817, so its quite likely. 1837 Leigh Mather 1839 John Mather 1847 Hannah Mather Hannah (44) was living with her sister Sarah Ann Stubbs family in 1891 1841 James Mather James missing from 1861 census 1853 Sarah Ann Mather Sarah Ann Mather married Samuel Charles Stubbs (b.1855) from Taunton, Somerset. 1823 Ann Leah Ann was much (22y) younger than James, but its clear from the 1861 census Ann (36) daughter of of Joseph and Mary Leah was the wife of the paper maker, Joseph Mather (58) living with them. 1804 Ann Mather 1800 Nancy Mather What happened to Nancy?  There's a Nancy Taylor, born Whitefield on the 1851 & 1871 census records which could be her.  This Nancy married John Taylor and had Hannah b. 28 May 1828.  She may have married Ellis Vickars, but there's no trace of them after the banns. 1813 John Mather 1812 Mary Bolton Mary had been married before, as she was Mary Coates, daughter of John Bolton when she married John, aged 30 1815 Nathan Mather Nathan is a spanner in the works.  He and his mother Elizabeth are from Leeds.

Is there a Yorkshire and a Prestwich Berry Mather?  Is that why there is such a gap between baptisms.  However the burial of Burry in Bradford is a perfect age match, so more likely he married a different Elizabeth before 1815.
1829 Sarah (Sally) Greenwood 1807 - 1830 Ashton Mather 23 23 Like his father, Ashton was also a Tailor when he died, aged 23 years.  He never married. 1812 Lucy Mather Lucy Mather married John Smethurst, 6 Mar 1836 at Middleton, Lancashire, England.  John was a Cotton Opperative.  They had a family of at least 6 at Ashton under Lyne. 1810 - 1837 Rachel Mather 27 27 Rachel died a spinster of Middleton (recorded on burial record), aged only 27. 1808 Elizabeth (Betty) Mather Elizabeth married Dennis Ogden, a Widower and Weaver at Middleton, 20 Aug 1826.

Betty and Dennis lived at Whitefield.  Their infant son James (of Dennis and Betty) died 1828 as was buried at Prestwich.  They also had Sarah (1833), Ann (1835) and William (1837), and then nothing.
1822 - 1891 Moses Mather 69 69 Moses was 20 in 1841, with his parents John and Ann.  The Moses aged 15 with Ellis Mather at Mather's Fold is another.

In 1881, Moses (Widower, 58) and Samuel (41) were boarding with their sister Ann Manock (47) hand her husband Thomas (42) and family.

In 1819 thru 1825, John was a Weaver, living at Pott Hall, Heywood.

John was a Sand Dealer in 1841, living with Ann (both 40) and their 6 children at Knowles Brow, Bury.  Since his son Moses was with Ellis Mather, it is assumes John is his brother.

In 1851, John (farmer) and Ann (54 & 51) were at Knowles Brow, Heywood, Heap with James (30), Moses (28), John (26), Joseph (24), Ann (17)  and Samuel (11)
