Florence was born on November 5th, 1901 in Durham.1  Florence's father was John Charles Mather and her mother was Hephzibah Leigh. She had three brothers and three sisters, named Wallace, Wilfred, John, Ethel, Effie and Lily.  She was the fifth oldest of the seven children.
