Richard is probably the son of Thomas and Margaret of Wirthnell
Richard and Ann (who was French) started their married life at Withnell, where Richard was born. They moved to Westhoughton about 1836, before Sarah was born.
In 1841, Richard (an Ag. Labourer) and Ann (both 40) were at New Collier Row, Halliwell. Charlotte, Margaret and Betty (17,14,11) were cotton doublers and there was also children Thomas, Robert, Miles and Sarah.
In 1851, Richard (44) was from Withnell, but the family had moved South to Colliers Row, Halliwell and became a mining family. His wife Ann (48) was French.
In 1861, Richard (61, born Withnell) was still at Halliwell with Ann (60, French), and was now a Wood Cutter. Daughters Betsy (31) and Sarah (22) were still with them, both unmarried.
In 1871, Richard (72) was a gardener with wife Ann (71) at 1 Smithhills Mill with daughter Elizabeth (40) and grandaughters Ann Crompton (20) and Elizabeth Wilkinson (13, born Tunstall, Staffs)
In 1881, Richard (84), now a gardners labourer and widowed, is still with his single daughter Betsy (50, born Withnell) at Halliwell. Richard has his place of birth as Tunstall, Staffordshire (which should be his grandaughter).
