Sarah's father was Richard Mather and her mother was Ann Marsden. Her paternal grandparents were Robert Mather and Peggy Duerden. She had three brothers and three sisters, named Thomas, Robert, Miles, Charlotte, Margaret and Betty. She was the youngest of the seven children. She died at the age of 26 in June 1864 in Halliwell. Her burial was on June 4th, 1864 in Horwich.²

- The Sarah Mather, borh Halliwell was the daughter of Richard Mather and Ann Marsden (i.e. not Isaac Mather and Elizabeth Marsden of Edgworth)
  
  Sarah married Farncis Gornall at Horwich in 1861, but the marriage only lasted 3 years.
  
  They had a daughter Ann in 1862 whio died aged 1. Then Sarah died June 1864 at Halliwell and was buried at Horwich, aged 25.
