Margaret was born in 1827 in Withnell.1  Margaret's father was Richard Mather and her mother was Ann Marsden.  Her paternal grandparents were Robert Mather and Peggy Duerden. She had three brothers and three sisters, named Thomas, Robert, Miles, Charlotte, Betty and Sarah.  She was the second oldest of the seven children.

‌Margaret and James were married in a religious ceremony on October 10th, 1847 at St. Mary (Deane).2   They had four sons and a daughter, named James, Ellis, Richard, Benjamin and Ann.  There are no more children.
