Esther's father was Robert Mather and her mother was Peggy Duerden. Her paternal grandparents were James Mather and Esther Mason. She had five brothers and a sister, named James, Robert, Thomas, Edmund, Richard and Margaret. She was the second oldest of the seven known children.
