Effie was born in March 1898 in Sunderland.1  Effie's father was John Charles Mather and her mother was Hephzibah Leigh. She had three brothers and three sisters, named Wallace, Wilfred, John, Ethel, Lily and Florence.  She was the third oldest of the seven children.
