John was born in 1900. John's father was (John) William Johnson and his mother was Ellen Nora Mather. His maternal grandparents were Samuel Cowley Mather and Elizabeth Cooper. He had two brothers and two sisters, named James, William, Hannah and Stella. He was the second youngest of the five known children. He had a half-brother named Charles. He died at the age of 2 in 1902.
