Lydia was born in December 1923 in Sunderland.1  Lydia's father was Wallace Mather and her mother was Martha Isabella Hammond.  Her paternal grandparents were John Charles Mather and Hephzibah Leigh; her maternal grandparents were William Hammond and Elizabeth Ann Scott. She had four brothers and a sister, named Lily, William, John, Ronald and Hephzibah.  She was the fifth oldest of the six children.
