Lily was born in December 1915 in Sunderland.1  Lily's father was Wallace Mather and his mother was Martha Isabella Hammond.  His paternal grandparents were John Charles Mather and Hephzibah Leigh; his maternal grandparents were William Hammond and Elizabeth Ann Scott. He had three brothers and two sisters, named William, John, Ronald, Hephzibah and Lydia.  He was the second oldest of the six children.
