Robert was born in June 1836 in Bolton and his baptism took place there on September 18th, 1836.1  Robert's father was William Mather and his mother was Helen (Ellen) Cunliffe.  His paternal grandparents were Richard Mather and Hannah Knowles; his maternal grandparents were James Cunliffe and Ann Gibson. He had three brothers and three sisters, named Samuel, Nathan, William, Catherine, Anne and Elizabeth. He had an adopted sister named Hannah.  He died at the age of 1 in November 1837 in Bolton.  He was buried on November 8th, 1837 at St. Peter's (Bolton).2 3
