Elizabeth's father was William Mather and her mother was Helen (Ellen) Cunliffe. Her paternal grandparents were Richard Mather and Hannah Knowles; her maternal grandparents were James Cunliffe and Ann Gibson. She had four brothers and two sisters, named Robert, Samuel, Nathan, William, Catherine and Anne. She had an adopted sister named Hannah.
