William's father was William Mather and his mother was Helen (Ellen) Cunliffe. His paternal grandparents were Richard Mather and Hannah Knowles; his maternal grandparents were James Cunliffe and Ann Gibson. He had three brothers and three sisters, named Robert, Samuel, Nathan, Catherine, Anne and Elizabeth. He had an adopted sister named Hannah. He died at the age of 72 on December 12th, 1925 in Hampden. His burial was in December 1925 in Hampton.²¹

- It is probable William Gibson Mather also lived on the Falls Road, at or near the Cross Keys Tavern. His son Charles G Mather held the funeral of his wife Lula May (aged 25) there in Jan 1919.
  
  After their step-father John died, Samuel (24), Nathan (22) and William (16) in 1870 were living with George Washington, a Hotel Keeper from England. George was Ellen's third husband.
  
  In 1937 Mary F (Widow of William G) is listed at 3609 Falls Road, and William J Mather is listed at 3709 Falls Road.

    - For a while, William G Mather was a show maker,. listed in the City Directories (dates TBC). William's father-in-law was also a show maker, so it may be that William may have worked with McCauley soon after he was married.
