Jacob
Mather
62
62
In 1798 Jacob Mather paid rent at Breightmet. This may have been his father.
Jacob was born about 1802 in Bolton, possibly the son of Jacob. There is no baptism for Jacob, and likewise Jacob Snr was widowed, and also no first marriage or baptism records.
In 1841, Jacob was 35, a cotton washer at Crook Street, E Bolton with Sarah (30) and John (15). Also present were William and Alice Taylor (both 25), possibly related. Neighbours were John and Mary Buckley (65 & 60), the Oil Sheet Maker.
In 1843, Jacob's wife Sarah died in 1843, so in 1851 he was a widower (49), living in lodgings at 22 Moor Lane, Western Bolton.
By 1861, Jacob (58, born Bolton) was a Cotton Hand, working and lodging at Mayfield Terrace, Mayfield, Staffordshire with Joseph Dagnall (23 a cotton hand) and wife Betsey (23, born Bolton), not Jacob's daughter, as Joseph Dagnall married Elizabeth Pollitt Q1/1859 in Ashborne.
There are so few records for Jacob, it seem likely he went by another name, probably James, a common alternative.
1903 - 1975
Ernest
Mather
72
72
In 1911 Ernest was 7, an only child, at Tonge Moor, Bolton with his parents John (a Cost Clerk) and Eliza. Enrest followed in his fathers footsteps, also becoming a clerk.
In 1939, Ernest and wife Eliza were living at 21 Cartmel Crescent, Bolton with two others (probably their two children).

Mather
23-Jul-1763 (Ref.QSP/1878/24): Bolton le Moors. Certificate of eligibility of Samuel Mather, prisoner, to receive the county allowance (record held at Lancashire Archives). Is this the same Samuel Mather? Well quite possibly, as no Samuel Mather was married in Bolton in the following years.
1759
Mary
Mather
Mary probably married Samuel Chadwick (1780, weaver) or Jno Boyd (1785), both at St. Peters
1751 - 1839
Margaret

88
1820 - 1847
Benjamin
Mather
27
27
Benjamin was a House Painter in Little Bolton in 1841. He died in 1847. Perhaps he fell of his ladder!
Baptism record shows Benjamin was the twin brother of Mary, mother is Mary Mather, a spinster. He could be one of our family, as in Little Bolton and buried Walmsley. However, a baptism at Radcliffe suggests otherwise! We need to see his grave!
In 1841, Benjamin Mather (25) was a House Painter in Kay Street, living with William (also a house painter) and Mary Chalinor (both 30).
Benjamin does not appear to have married, at least not in Lancashire (unless to Mary Minks in Liverpool which is unlikely).
1820
Mary
Mather
Mary and Benjamin were twins of Mother Mary Mather, a spinster.

John
Mather
77
77
WARNING: There is also a John and Ann Greenwood of Great Bolton whjo married in 1781 and had over 10 children.
Probably brother of James of Darcy Lever (see Alice's baptism) and/or Samuel, a farmer of Radcliffe.
In 1823, Thomas, John's father, left one cottage in King Street, Great Bolton, to son John Mather.
In 1841, John was at Flash, Brieghtmet (60) a Farmer, living alone.
In 1851, John Mather (73, a retired farmer from Breightment) was living with his daughter Ellen (40) and son-in-law (shown as "Step-father") Joseph Phethean (48).
John's daughter Sarah was at Roscoe Fold, Breightmet, so John is probably related to Jeremy Mather.
~1680 - 1717
Abraham
Mather
37
37
Abraham and Alice both left wills, the only ones indexed for Little Bolton (although others for Turton).
~1680 - 1718
Ales
(Alice)
Rothwell
38
38
Alice, recorded as "Ales" on Marriage Index.
After Abraham died, yoy may expect Ales (or Alice) to remarry. However, there are no marriages, but a death of Alice Mather widow instead. No age gived, but she was still young.

79
79
Zacharias or Zacchariah Mather.
His father was Richard, a collier, and a close relative may also have been a Zachariah Mather (buried 23 May 1665 at St Peter, Bolton). There's also a Zacharias Mather married to Anna Elizabeth with daughter Anna Regina born 26 July 1700 in Prussia, so there may be a German origin.
Zachariah Mather of of Birkenshaw in Turton, husbandman died and left a Will in 1665.
1798 - 1867
Isaac
Mather
69
69
Isaac born 1796 was a bastard son of Mary Mather of Little Bolton. No farther is given, although Mary Mather, if the same person, married Henry Warburton by licence in April 1801.
He may have had a brother Jacob. Also a posible brother of Alice Mather, wife of Samuel (both from Turton).
A Weaver in 1816 when married, and 1817 - >1822
In 1841, Isaac Mather (45) was a Beer Seller with his second wife Jane (50) at the Old White Horse, Wallbach, Edgworth. His children Joseph, Alice, Peter, Jacob, Jane, and Sarah were with him. The Old White Horse was taken over by Annis Bromily, an unmarried woman, aged 66 in 1851. Isaac was a neighbour, but now farming 28 acres (with his family).
In 1844 Isaac was an Out Worker when daughter Alice of Edgworth Moor married William Crowshaw
In 1851, Isaac and Jane (52 & 53) are at Walleach, Edgworth farming 28 acres. With them are Joseph (27), Peter and Jacob (both 25), and Sarah (15).
1853: Isaac Mather continued to be a Beer Seller in Edgworth, and is listed in the 1853 and 1855 trade directories.
In 1861, Isaac (65) was a widower, lodging with his daughter Margaret Garside and son Joseph at Doffer Fold (next to Buckley Fold), Radcliffe.
In 1863, old Isaac may have married Mary Haddock at Bury RO (TBC).
Isaac died in 1867 and his death was registered at Bury.
~1736 - 1799
Abraham
Mather
63
63
WARNING: Parent are not confirmed.
Abraham was probably brother of John, Richard and Peter, all whom used the same Bank Street Unitarian chapel.
Abraham Mather, a Chapman (i.e. a peddler or hawker of goods such as wool and cotton) of Bolton and Elizabeth Saxton were married by licence. Both were able to sign their names.
After Abraham's wife Elizabeth died in 1768 he was left with his young child Richard to look after, but Richard died soon after. Abraham then re-married Alice Rothwell in 1770. His signature on Alices marriage record matches that of his previous marriage.
1767 - 1837
Jeremiah
(Joseph)
Mather
69

Jeremiah was a weaver when he married Ann in 1794
In 1793 and 1813, both his marriages were at St. Peter, Bolton. His March 1813 marriage was only 2 months after his first wife died.
The 1801 Breightmet Census records a population of 734 in 137 inhabited houses, two of which were occupied by Mather families. Jacob Mather had 5 and Joseph 6. There was no Jeremiah in Breightmet (or Bolton), no baptism with Jeremiah (or Jeremy) as a father, so therefore it seems likely Jeremiah was known as Joseph.
In 1834, Jeremiah was Provision dealer in Brown Street, Little Bolton. John and Elizabeth and family were in Brown St in 1841, so could be related. Also, Jeremiah a Shoe Maker & Margaret Rockcliffe (55 & 40) where there in 1841.
In 1837 Jeremiah Mather of Little Bolton died, as was buried at Ainsworth.

25 Feb 1820, Peter Mather (22), a weaver, was initiated as a freemason at the Lodge of Faith, Piklington.
1820 Peter, a labourer married Sarah Hall at Middleton St Leonard. Sarah died in 1828, aged 26. In 1830, Peter (still a labourer) then married Sarah Barlow at Manchester Cathederal.
In 1836, brothers James and Peter Mather (and cousin Samuel Mather) had freehold houses and spring at Church Street, Radcliffe.

In Dec 1803, Jacob gave a £1 subscription to the Breightmet volunteer Corps.
In 1804, Jacob was a widower when he married Ellen Holmes (a widow).
Is Jacob aka James?: There is no first marriage or any baptism records for children of Jacob Mather, yet he married twice and probably had a wife and 3 children with him in 1801. Also there is only one recent burial of a possible wife before he remarried in 1804: Mary wife of "James" Mather, Weaver was buried at Radcliffe in 1801.

In 1841, Jeremiah and Alice (both 25) were farmers at East Breightmet Hills. Thay already had four children.
In 1851, Jeremiah and Alice (38 & 39) were farming 23 acres at Willows, Breightmet. All the family were born at Radcliffe. Today, "The Willows, Radcliffe" is between Radcliff and Breightmet, close to Bradley Fold. There was Mary (17), Samuel (13), John (8), Robert (6) and Peter (4) but James (b.1837) had presumabley died.
In 1861, Jeremy and Alice (both 49) were at the Ashes Farm (also 23 acres), Breightmet. Mary had married and left home, Samuel (25) was there, Jeremiah died died in 1856 and the 4 youngest sons were there.

The Jan 1838 St Peter's, Bolton baptism shows James Haney Mather was the son of William a weaver and Jane. There only appears to be one William and Jane (Wilkinson) marriage and this fits with William being born in Bolton following his siblings born in Ainsworth and Droylsden. No other sibling was baptised in Bolton.
In 1841, James Henry is missing, not with mother Jane at Drolysden, Manchester (so may not belong here, although father William is also missing).
In 1851, James (17) was an Apprentice clogger in lodgings followed by a clogger in 1861. In 1861, another James Mather (aged 19) was a clogger, son of Isaac Mather at Wittaker's (i.e. Whittakers, Entwistle). That James died in 1861.

About 1863 son Henry a coffin maker was born, possibly in Ireland. Henry married in 1883, naming his father James H Mather a shopkeeper.
From 1865 to 1871, James and Martha may have been in Ireland (as daughter Ellen was born there about 1865).

Luke Mather must have been born about the time his father died, in Jan 1827 as he was 13, a working coal miner in 1841. He was names Mather, not Boden (like Thomas and Charles), so may be the son of Thomas Mather (but was Boden in 1851).
In 1841, Luke Mather aged only 13 was a coal miner. There was another younger Luke, aged 10 at Middleton (son of Richard and Sarah). Both married Elizabeths at Manchester (1849 & 1851).
In 1851, Luke "Boden" (21) is with his parents Thomas and Betsy Mather and family at Pilkington.

Its not clear where William was in 1841 and 1851.
In 1851, William may have been a servant (21, druggist) to Samuel & Ann Chadwick at Top o'the Height, Bolton. If this is him, he appears to have a sister Betsy, b.1822 at Blackrod, also a servant.
2 Jan 1857, William Mather of Stand Lane married Dinah Fogg of Cow Lane, daughter of George Foff a Carter at All Saints, Stand.

Probably born around 1750 to 1760.
1 Dec 1794, Betty was a spinster when she married Thomas Heaton, Widower at St Peter's Bolton. However, she may have been a widow (as was Happy Mather for her 2nd and 3rd Bolton marriages).
Possibly from Little Lever where Meadowcroft Heaton was born or Ringlet where he was buried.

Having accounted for all the Other James Mathers born in Bolton, it seems most likely this is James Mather, son of James and Mary Ann Gregory (in 1861).
James was born in Farnworth Q4 1840, in Greater Bolton, not Radcliffe, although that is where he lived and married. He was the illegitimate son of Mary Ann Mather.
James moved to live in Radcliffe soon after his birth was registered at Farnworth. In 1843 his mother had George, another illegitimate child at Radcliffe.
In 1861, James Mather (20) was a Cotton Piece Dyer at Tabitha Fields, Radcliffe (same as later years) the son of James Gregory (32) and Mary Ann (42) with two Davenport and three Gregory siblings. He was the only Mather.

Between Joseph Mather's marriage in 1883 and Elizabeths re-marriage in 1889, Joseph died. He could be the Joseph that died at Ardwich in 1888, aged 33. However, the older Joseph that died in 1884 at Horwich, aged 45 is more likely. Joseph was from Church Street, Radcliffe and this is also the abode when their only child Charles was baptised. We need his marriace certificate to confirm.
