Hannah was born on March 14th, 1816 in Ramsbottom and her baptism took place on September 27th, 1817 in Accrington.1  Hannah's father was James Mather and her mother was Mary (Nancy) Stott. She had two brothers and five sisters, named John, James, Eliza, Rachel, Martha, Sarah and Mary.  She was the third oldest of the eight children.
