Thomas' father was Isaac Mather and his mother was Amelia Beever. His paternal grandparents were Thomas Mather and Mary Ann (Martha) Jane Bolton. He had two brothers and two sisters, named Ernest, Fred, Florence and Lizzie. He was the third oldest of the five children.
