Maria's father was Thomas Mather and her mother was Mary Ann (Martha) Jane Bolton. Her paternal grandparents were Thomas Barlow and Betty (Elizabeth) Mather. She had two brothers and three sisters, named Robert, Isaac, Mary, Mary and Betty. She was the youngest of the six children.
