Mary's father was Thomas Mather and her mother was Mary Ann (Martha) Jane Bolton. Her paternal grandparents were Thomas Barlow and Betty (Elizabeth) Mather. She had two brothers and three sisters, named Robert, Isaac, Mary, Betty and Maria. She was the oldest of the six children. She died at the age of 1 in 1854 in Bolton.¹
