Robert's father was Thomas Mather and his mother was Mary Ann (Martha) Jane Bolton. His paternal grandparents were Thomas Barlow and Betty (Elizabeth) Mather. He had a brother and four sisters, named Isaac, Mary, Mary, Betty and Maria. He was the third oldest of the six children.
