Robert was born in 1837. Robert's father was Thomas Barlow and his mother was Betty (Elizabeth) Mather. His maternal grandparents were Thomas Mather and Ann Entwistle. He had three brothers and two sisters, named Thomas, James, John, Jane and Ann. He was the second oldest of the six children. He had a half-brother and a half-sister, named William and Maria.
