Jane's father was Thomas Barlow and her mother was Betty (Elizabeth) Mather. Her maternal grandparents were Thomas Mather and Ann Entwistle. She had five brothers and two sisters, named William, Thomas, Robert, James, John, Maria and Ann. She was the fifth oldest of the eight children. She died as an infant at the age of 1 in 1839 in Holcombe.¹
