Alice's father was Thomas Mather and her mother was Ann Entwistle. Her paternal grandparents were Peter Mather and Ellen Howarth. She had four brothers and four sisters, named James, Thomas, Isaac, Thomas, Alice, Hannah, Ann and Elizabeth. She was the seventh oldest of the nine children.
