Ann's father was Thomas Mather and her mother was Ann Entwistle. Her paternal grandparents were Peter Mather and Ellen Howarth. She had four brothers and four sisters, named James, Thomas, Isaac, Thomas, Alice, Hannah, Elizabeth and Alice. She was the fourth oldest of the nine children.
