Edwin was born in 1844 in Pennsylvania (PA).  Edwin's father was Amos York and his mother was Martha Mather.  His maternal grandparents were James Mather and Mary (Nancy) Stott. He had a brother and three sisters, named James, Maria, Mary and Elizabeth.  He was the oldest of the five children.
