James' father was James Heap and his mother was Hannah Mather. His maternal grandparents were Thomas Mather and Ann Entwistle. He had five brothers and two sisters, named Joseph, William, Richard, John, Henry, Alice and Margaret. He was the third youngest of the eight children.
