Matilda was born in June 1156 in Windsor Castle, Windsor, Berkshire, England.  Matilda's father was King Henry Curtmantle FitzEmpress ("Plantagenet") Plantagenet II of England and her mother was Princess Eleanor of Aquitaine.  Her paternal grandparents were Count Geoffrey ("the Fair", "le bon") Plantagenet IV or V of Anjou and Princess Adelaide (Lady of the English) of England; her maternal grandparents were William X of Aquitaine and Eleanor de Rochefoucauld Chatellerault. She had a brother and two sisters, named "Lackland", Eleanor and Joanna. She had a half-brother and three half-sisters, named William, Alix, Agnes and Mary.  She died at the age of 33 on July 28th, 1189 in Brunswick, Germany.  She was buried in St Blasius, Braunschweig, Braunschweig, Germany.

‌Matilda and Henry were married in a religious ceremony on February 1st, 1168 in St. Peter, Domkirche, Minden, Germany.  They had two sons named Henry and Wilhelm.
