Robert was born about 1037 in Mortagne-au-Perche, Orne, Normandy, France.  Robert's father was Count Herlouin de Conteville of Mortaigne and his mother was Herleva de Falaise.  His paternal grandfather was Earl Jean de Conteville of Comyn and his paternal grandmother is Jean de Mellent; his maternal grandparents were Chamberlain Rollo Fulbert de Falaise and Duxia de Falaise. He had a brother and two sisters, named Odo, Muriel and Emma. He had two half-brothers and three half-sisters, named Ralph, "the Conqueror", Adâelaèide, Godiva and Felicia.  He died in France.  He was buried in Abbaye De Grestain.


Robert's family with Maud de Montgomery

‌Robert and Maud were married in a religious ceremony in 1054.  They had a son and four daughters, named William, Matilda, Agnes, Denise and de Mortaigne.
