William was born about 1173 in Woodstock Manor, England.  William's father was King Henry Curtmantle FitzEmpress ("Plantagenet") Plantagenet II of England and his mother was Rosamunde Clifford.  His paternal grandparents were Count Geoffrey ("the Fair", "le bon") Plantagenet IV or V of Anjou and Princess Adelaide (Lady of the English) of England; his maternal grandparents were Baron Walter FitzRichard FitzPons I de Clifford and Margaret de Toeni. He had a half-brother and three half-sisters, named "Lackland", Matilda, Eleanor and Joanna.  He died in England.  He was buried in Cathedral, Salisbury, Wiltshire, England.

‌William and Ela were married in a religious ceremony in 1198 in Salisbury, Wiltshire, England.  They had two sons and two daughters, named William, Stephen, Isabell and Ida.
