Berengaria was born in Leon, Leon, Spain.  Berengaria's father was King Alfonso Fernandez IX of Leon and her mother was Queen Berengaria of Castile.  Her paternal grandparents were King Ferdinand Alfonsez II of Leon and Princess Uracca Alfonsez of Portugal; her maternal grandparents were King Alfonso ("the Noble") VIII of Castile and Princess Eleanor Plantagenet. She had three brothers named "the Saint", "the Saint" and Alfonso. She had a half-sister named Urraca.  She died on April 12th, 1237.

‌Berengaria and Jean were married in a religious ceremony in 1222.  They had two sons named Jean and "d'Acre".
