Ferdinand was born in 1137 in Toledo, Castile.  Ferdinand's father was King Alfonso ("the Emperor", "Pierre-Raimund") Raimundez VII and his mother was Berenguela Berengar of Barcelona.  His paternal grandparents were Count Raymond of Burgundy & Castile and Queen Uracca Alfonsez of Castile and Leon; his maternal grandparents were Count Raymond ("the Great") III of Barcelona and Dulce Aldonza Milhaud. He had a brother and two sisters, named "the Desired", Constance and Sancha. He had a half-sister named Sancha.  He died at the age of 51 on January 22nd, 1188 in Benavente, Zamora, Castile.

‌Ferdinand and Uracca were married in a religious ceremony about June 1165 in Coimbra, Coimbra, Portugal.  They had a son named Alfonso.
