Jean was born about 1195 in Acre, Palestine.  Jean's father was Count Erard de Brienne II and his mother is Agnes de Montfaucon.  His paternal grandfather was Comte Gauthier de Brienne II and his paternal grandmother is Adele de Rameru; his maternal grandparents were Comte Richard de Montfaucon II and Agnes de Montbelliard. He had a brother named Alphonse.  He was the younger of the two children. He had a half-sister named Felicite.  He died on March 21st, 1237 in Constantinople, Turkey.

‌Jean and Berengaria were married in a religious ceremony in 1222.  They had two sons named Jean and "d'Acre".
