His paternal grandparents were King Edward II of England and Scotland and Princess Isabella ("the she-wolf") of France; his maternal grandparents were William ("the Good") de Avesnes III or V and Jeanne de Valois. He had three brothers named Lionel, John and Thomas de Woodstock. He died at the age of 61 on August 1st, 1402 in Langley, Hertfordshire, England.
