Jean was born in April 1218 in Houffalize, Luxembourg, Belgium.  Jean's father was ArchDeacon Bouchard d'Avesnes of Laon and his mother was Margaret I of Hainault & Flanders.  His paternal grandfather was Seigneur Jacques d'Avesnes and his paternal grandmother is Adele de Guise; his maternal grandparents were Emperor Baldwin (VI) or IX of Flanders and Mary of Champagne. He had a brother named Baudouin.  He was the older of the two children. He had a half-brother named Guy.  He died at the age of 39 on December 24th, 1257 in Valenciennes, Nord, France.  He was buried in Valenciennes, Nord, France.


Jean's family with Alida of Holland

‌Jean and Alida were married in a religious ceremony in September 1246 in Frankfort Am Main, Hessen-Nassau, Prussia.  They had a son named Jean.
