John was born in March 1340 in Abbaye de St Bavon, Ghent, Flandre-Orientale, Belgium.  John's father was King Edward Plantagenet III of England and his mother was Queen Philippa Hainault.  His paternal grandparents were King Edward II of England and Scotland and Princess Isabella ("the she-wolf") of France; his maternal grandparents were William ("the Good") de Avesnes III or V and Jeanne de Valois. He had three brothers named Lionel, Edmund and Thomas de Woodstock.  He died at the age of 59 on March 3rd, 1399 in Leicester Castle, Leicester, Leicestershire, England.  He was buried in St. Paul's Cathedral, London, Middlesex, England.
