Soon after they married in 1841, Ann Mather (35) was with William Mather (65) at School Brow, Billinge Chapel End (part of Wigan). William appears to have had a son William (15) from an earlier marriage.
William may have had a brother Peter (60) who was a neighbor also at School Brow in 1841. There were also several other Mathers households here including Tabatha (7), and another Ann Mather (70) with a daughter Ann (35), so quiite a Mather commune.

William was widowed when he married a much younger Ann Mather in 1841. We know their ages from the 1841 census.
Who was he married to earlier? William Married Betty Cowley, both of Upholland in 1804. This is close to Billinge so is likely to be him. Their witness was John Mather. The death confirms her age and marrage of William from Orrell. However, Betty is the daughter of George and Betty Holme (see Benjamin's baptism).

WARNING: There are two John and Betty families, clearly demobstrated by the births of both Richard and John in 1800, only two months appart. There are marriages in 1790 and 1796 to Betties Baxter and Houghton. Most people have the marriages are based on age, but it is more likely this John married Betty Baxter, as Thomas Mather (his oldest brother) was a witness.
In 1804, John was witness to William's marriage to Betty Cowely. He was therefore likely to be the closest brother.
In 1831, John died in Billinge, aged 58
In 1841, John (40, farmer) and James (30, mason) were two heads of families at Billinge Hill, sons of John and Betty
