Peter's father was Peter Mather and his mother was Ellen Howarth.  His paternal grandparents were Peter Mather and Elizabeth (Betty) Cranshaw; his maternal grandparents were George Howarth and Ellen Greenhalgh. He had six brothers and two sisters, named William, Richard, Thomas, Thomas, James, John, Ellen and Margaret.  He was the third youngest of the nine known children.  He died at the age of 1 in September 1784 in Turton.  He was buried on September 13th, 1784 at Turton Chapel.²
