James was born about 1781 in Bolton.

Birth Notes

James' father was Peter Mather and his mother was Ellen Howarth. His paternal grandparents were Peter Mather and Elizabeth (Betty) Cranshaw; his maternal grandparents were George Howarth and Ellen Greenhalgh. He had six brothers and two sisters, named William, Richard, Thomas, Thomas, Peter, John, Ellen and Margaret. He was the fourth youngest of the nine known children. He died in March 1782 in Bolton. He was buried on March 29th, 1782 at St. Peter's (Bolton).¹
