    • One of the first pages of the Walmsley Chapel Meeting House (Presbyterian) is dominated by two Mather families, William+Ann and Peter+Ellin.  These two families were to be the grandparents of Samuel Mather (1791-1854) and Alice Mather (1792-1879) who married 9 September 1810.  Therefore Samuel and Alice (the parents of John Mather) were second cousins.
Richard was born in 1765 in Turton and his christening took place on December 24th, 1765 at Walmsley Presbyterian conducted by minister John Aspinal.1 2  Richard's father was Peter Mather and his mother was Ellen Howarth.  His paternal grandparents were Peter Mather and Elizabeth (Betty) Cranshaw; his maternal grandparents were George Howarth and Ellen Greenhalgh. He had six brothers and two sisters, named William, Thomas, Thomas, James, Peter, John, Ellen and Margaret.  He was the second oldest of the nine known children.  He died after 1802.
