Ellen Howarth. His paternal grandparents were
Peter Mather and
Elizabeth (Betty) Cranshaw; his maternal grandparents were
George Howarth and
Ellen Greenhalgh. He had six brothers and two sisters, named

Margaret. He was the fourth oldest of the nine known children. He died as an infant about 1775 in
Turton.
