William was born in 1802 in Manchester and his baptism took place on December 19th, 1802 at Manchester Cathedral.¹

William's father was William Mather and his mother was Margaret Entwistle. His paternal grandparents were Peter Mather and Ellen Howarth. He had two brothers named Peter and John. He was the second oldest of the three children.
