1891 John and Eliza with John & George lived at 27 Marion Street Birkenhead where he worked as Points shunter.  Ada , Esther & Florence can be found staying with grandparents (Michard & Esther Ererton* as transcribed) in Eyton, Denbighshire, Wales.

1901 John and Eliza with 6 children lived at 1 Tunnel Road Birkenhead where he worked as Publican and Florrie (Florence) aged 19 works as a waitress at a Pub.
Ada and Joseph are found living at 32 Camden Street where Ada worked at home as a dressmaker and Joseph worked as a railway points maker.

By 1906, John had a Commercial Hotel at 25 Grange Road and 1 Tunnel Road (as well as Richard Brereton being at the Red Lion, at 7 Tunnel Road). See Kelly's 1906 directory.

About 1906, John moved to the White Lion at Childer Thornton, and was recorded there in the 1911 census (59) with wife Eliza (56) and George, William and May (20, 17, & 13).

On Oct 16th 1913, John made his will, leaving everything to his wife Eliza.  Alfred Goodwin and Joseph Shipley were witness.  Probate was granted 10 Feb 1914.

WARNING: Thomas (b.8131) and Hannah (b.1838) Brearton also had a John Brereton, born Buereton, Cheshire of same age.
1881 - 1955 Florence (Florrie) Brereton 73 73 Ada, Florence and Esther were living with Grandparents, Richard and Esther at Marchwell, Denbishire, N. Wales in 1891

Florrie was a witness at Ada's Wedding to Joseph Shipley in 1899.

NOTE: There's another Florence J Brereton (b.1881), daughter of John and Elizabeth, living in Tattenhall in 1891. This is a diferent family.
1883 - 1945 Esther (Ettie) Brereton 62 62 Ada, Florence and Esther were living with Grandparents, Richard and Esther at Marchwell, Denbishire, N. Wales in 1891

Esther (Ettie) married Richard Blade Hughes in 1906. NOTE: There was another Birkenhead marriage between John Hughes and Jessie Brereton in 1908.

In 1939, Richard (a head postman) and Esther were at 14 Water Street, Birkenhead, Cheshire (both aged 78).
1887 - 1959 John Brereton 71 71 John had left home by 1911, boarding and working as a carpenter in Hampstead, London.

Four different John Breretons married in 1919, and our John  married Gladys Malpass in New Ferry.  John and Gladys were together in 1939, John a Charge Hand Joiner Builder.

In 1939, John and Gladys were at 89 New Ferry Road, Bebington.  They had their two children with them (obscured on the register).
1890 - 1970 George Brereton 79 79 The George Brereton (21) who Married Florence Harrison in 1908, was the son of Edwin, so of another family.  Another George Brereton married Ellen Bradley Allard (not Mary Ann Cartwright) in Northwich/Sandbatch in 1908 (father unknown).  Our George was still single in 1911.

In 1939, George and Priscilla and 3 children (latest one  obscured on the 1939 register) were at 19 Brereton Avenue, Bebington.  George was a master builder.

George ran the family building businesses "George Brereton and Sons".  His son Jack was the architect, other son George a joiner and daughter Beryl the office secretary. His wife Priscilla did the accounts.  The business model was to but small plots of land (some bomb damage) and build affordable homes,


1893 - 1951 William (Bill) Brereton 58 58 Auntie Margaret's tree has William shows as Bill, a Lingwist.

In 1921, William and Charlotte and son William Geoffrey were living at 4 Jessamine Road, Tranmere

The 1939 register shows him at 100 Mount Road, Birkenhead, a plumber.
1897 - 1933 May Brereton 35 35 1833 - 1904 Richard Brereton 70 70 Richard is one of my 4 Great Great (2X) Grandfathers.  Richards 1835 baptism at Tilston shows his parents were Richard and Jane, not George and Jane.

In 1851, Richard (16), was the oldest son of George Brereton.  Richard was an Ag Labourer at Cuddington Mill.

Richards marriage certificate (1853) shows his farther was George Brereton.  The family moved to Birkenhead in 1855 (after John was born).

Richard Brereton is recorded at 12 Chapel Street, beer retailer in the PO directory of 1857 (when he was only 24).

Living with his Brereton family and Eddowes's all of his married life.

In 1851, Richard (16, born Tilston) was an Al. Labourer at Cuddington Mill with his parents george and Jane and family.

In 1861, Brearton miss-spelt "Braeton" on e-census record.

In 1885, Richard is described as a Wheelwright when his son George married Mary Batho.

Im 1871, Richard and Esther (both 37) were living at 18 George Street, Birkenhead with John (17), Ann (15), Richard (13), George (10) and boarders George Eddowes (20) and Charles Harrison (25)

In 1891, Richard and Esther were at the Shropshire Inn, New Road.

Richard was a publican and had the "Bird in Hand" at 7 Chapel Street, Birkenhead.  It was a busy pub, opening at 6am so the night shift could have a drink after finishing work.

Richard retired but was still there when he died, 8th June 1904, aged 69.
1855 - 1935 Eliza (Lizzie) Batho 80 80 Married at Birkenhead in 1876.  Civil register Index 8a, page 686.

Eliza must have still been alive when her mother-in-law Esther wrote her will in 1917, leaving her one quater of the residual estate.

By the 1901 census Joseph is married to Ada (Brereton) (married 12 Sept 1899) and living in Birkenhead at 32 Camden Street.  Joseph is a railway points maker and Ada a dressmaker working from home.

In 1902 he became licensee of the White Lion, Childer Thornton and in 1908 had moved to the Wynnstay Arms, Birkenhead.  John and Eliza Brereton had the White Lion in 1911

In 1939 Joseph and Ada were at 47a New Chester Road , Bebington.  Joseph was license of a Beer House.

n 1940 he was Birkenhead Brewery’s oldest serving tenant. In 1912 he became a member of the Lower Bebington U.D.C representing Park Ward.  He was defeated in March 1922.
Founder member of the Riverside and the James Thompson Masonic Lodges. 
Former President of the Bromborough Old Age Pensioners’ Association.
Original organiser of the New Ferry fancy dress walking race and organised fancy dress football matches every Boxing Day.
Presented the Shipley Knock-out Challenge cup for Junior football.

Joseph aged 64 (a financier on departure and licensee on arrival) and Ada of 51 New Chester Rd, New Ferry departed 22 April 1939 to New York on Cunard's Britannica, arriving back at Liverpool on 8 May on the Scythia.
1877 - 1939 George Hale 62 62 Alice Maria Preece (George's sister-in-law) was staying with them in 1911. 1843 - 1893 John Brereton 50 50 Emigrated to Australia with his uncle Thomas and Thomas's wife, Martha, but must have returned and married Phoebe.

In 1869 when Sarah Elizabeth was baptised, John was living at 56 Morpeth Buildings, Birkenhead.

In 1871, John and Phoebe (both 28) were at 28 Morpeth Buildings, Birkenhead with Daughters Phoebe (5) and Mary Elizabeth (1)
1913 - 1989 Winifred (Winnie) May Shipley 76 76 Winifred was 13 on the 1939 register, living at 47a New Chester Road, Bebington. 1901 - 1980 James J Barr 79 79 James's parents were James Barr (b. 1868, Bonhill, Dunbartonshire, Scotland) and Margaret Mooney (1877-1962).

In 1919, James was in the RAF (His mother Margaret Barr was Next of kin). DOB, later 1962 visa and death all show 23 Jun 1901.

James P and Winifered M Barr lived in NY, USA.  That is another family.
James Douglas Gordon Barr Elizabeth (Rose) Anne Barr 1914 - 1979 Norman Douglas Holbrook Shipley 64 64 Norman D H Shipley (single) was a Pharmaceuticals Manager in 1939.  His DOB is shown as 14 Dec 14

Married Lesley STOTT in 1945.  They had two sons (one died) and one daughter.
1916 - 1994 Ada Jackson Shipley 78 78 Married Neville ROOT in 1936.
They had two sons (one deceased) and one daughter.
1902 - 1981 Esther Shipley 79 79 Esther was probably named after her grandmother, Esther Eddowes.

She married Sidney GRAHAM in 1924 at St Mark's in New Ferry.  They lived at 14a King's Lane, Bebington.  They had one son and one daughter.
1904 - 1955 Annie (Nancy) Shipley 50 50 Married John EBBITT in 1935.  Then John and Annie were living at 51 Grange Road, Hoylake, Cheshire in 1939.

Annie (and persumably her husband John) took over the tennancy of the Wynnstay Arms in New Ferry after her father Joseph retired in 1940.
1908 - 1993 Joseph Gordon Shipley 84 84 Married Mary FLATHER in 1936.  Joseph and Mary were living at 53 King's Lane, Bebington in 1939.  They had one son John, and one daughter Johanna. 1840 - 1910 William Shipley 69 69 Catherine Shipley had an illegitimate son William born on the 28th June 1840 at St Marylebone Workhouse. Catherine married John Banister in 1843 (13 Nov at St Michaels, Lichfield volume 17 page 99).  They had 6 further surviving children.  The family in 1851 lived at Fishwick Staffs. where John was a farm labourer.  By 1861 they had moved to the parish of Weeford.  William can be found to be a soldier at the 1Kent Second Chatham Depot Battalion, Chatham Barracks No1 Gillingham Medway. In 1871 no record can be found for William but the Banister family John, Catherine, Edward and Arthur are still in Weeford.

1881 William now married to Sarah Hunt (1873) have 5 children and living at Tamworth Road Farm Cottages Freeford.

1891 William and Sarah now live at Tamworth Lodge with the four youngest children.  William can be found to be a footman at Freeford Hall for Richard and Matilda Burnaby.  Joseph (17) is a general servant at Kings Bromley. Eventually he arrived in Birkenhead and probably worked as a footman for William Jackson of the Manor House.
1901 William and Sarah are still at Freeford with children Annie and Edward. Alice is a domestic servant in Toxteth.

1905 Ivy Winefred Kaye Ivy's married name was Roscoe.  Ivy lived with her mother in Brereton Avenue.  After her mother died, Ivy moved into a new bungalow in Waterfield Close.  Sometime later, I think Ivy then moved to live with or near to her daughter.

Ivy had a daughter.

In 1939, Esther and Harry were at 65 Acreville Road, Bebington, the family home of her parents.

1897 - 1960 Joseph (Joe) Dodd 63 63 Joseph's father was also Joseph Dodd. He died 13-Apr-1948 leving his estate to his widow Anna Maria Dodd of 3 Heather Dean, Bromborough.

Joseph Dodd and May Brereton (Joseph’s Shipleys younger sister-in-law) must have taken over as it is the last recorded abode of Joseph Dodd in 1960.

In 1924, Joseph and Margaret took over the licence of the White Lion at Childer Thornton and were living at the White Lion Public House, New Road, Ellesmere Port in 1939.

In 1933, Joe's first wife May died in chilldbirth. Reputedly, Joseph 'presented' Pat to the relatives and said that if anyone wanted to see her again, they would have to come to him.  From this point on, all contact with Pat was lost.

In 1940, Joseph moved to the Royal Oak at Bromborough.  In 1958, when the New Royal Oak was opened, he returned to the White Lion.

Joseph died in 1960.  See attached obituary.

1923 - 2022 Edna Dodd 99 99 Edna died in a nursing home in Surrey.  Edna had two children Suzanne and Michael.

The Edna Marion Dodd, born is Salford in 1922, daughter of William Ernest Dodd and Mary Smith is another.  Also, the Edna Dodd that married at Birkenhead in 1957 is another, born 1937.
