In 1857, James was at 25 Lord Street, Proprietor (?) of the Mersey Hotel.

In 1881, James Brereton (42) was a Gas fitter, living at 26 Argyle St South, Tranmere, aged 42, married to Ellen Aspinal (46) with daughters Ellen (17), Alice (15) and Louisa (6).
