Doris' father was Lewis Harold Sayce and her mother was Annie Brereton. Her maternal grandparents were Edward Brereton and Mary Hooley. She had three brothers named Harold, Harry and Eric. She was the youngest of the four children. She died at the age of 86 in August 1999 in Birkenhead.²
